Courses on working around underground piping and cabling
These training courses pertain to working safely near underground services such as cables, pipe and other utilities in accordance with HSG47 Guidelines. These training courses are accredited by City & Guilds.
These HSG47 training courses are available at any of EAP Training's purpose-built training centres. Click here to find your local training centre

HSG47 – Unit 1 Management, Planning & Surveying, Issuing of Permit
£XXX per candidate
This training course is intended for contractors, supervisors and other individuals involved in the planning, organisation and conducting of work near underground services or utilities. The course covers the dangers which can arise from working in proximity to underground services, and the requirements for planning and implementing safe systems of work.
The course content is as follows:
- Accident statistics involving underground services
- Regulations and guidance
- Avoiding Danger from Underground Services (HSG47)
- Service location
- Safe digging practices
- Permit to work
- Understanding and implementing safe systems of work
HSG47 – Unit 2 Familiarisation and Practical Use of SPX RD Series Locators
£XXX per candidate
This course focuses on the skilled and safe operation of SPD RD Series Locators, in order to properly locate and identify underground services. The course includes hands-on practical training in the use of locators.
This course will culminate in a practical assessment.
The course content is as follows:
- Understanidng the laws relating to working with underground services
- Interpreting utility plans
- Cable avoidance
- The practical and safe operation of cable avoidance equipment
- A practical assessment
HSG47 - Unit 4 Familiarisation and Practical Use of SPX Cat & Genny Gen4
£XXX per candidate
This course provides candidates with the knowledge and skills needed to safely operate the SPX Cat and Genny.
This course will culminate in a practical assessment.
Course content is as follows:
- Legislation and regulations
- HSG47- Avoiding Danger from Underground Services
- Cable avoidance using C.A.T. GEN 4/eCAT4 Generator
- Practical operation of cable avoidance equipment (C.A.T. GEN 4/eCAT4 & Genny)
- Practical assessment & evaluation
