LANTRA Awards – Hand-Held Hedge Cutter
Course content is as follows:
- Produce a site-specific risk assessment for hedge trimmer operations
- Identify the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required
- Identify the health and safety features required on a hedge trimmer
- Identify defects on a hedge trimmer and decide which the operator can remedy and which require a service engineer's attention
- Correctly carry out all routine maintenance in accordance with the Machine manufacturer's information and/or this workbook
- Prepare the hedge trimmer for use with the correct fuel / oil mix
- Start the hedge trimmer from both hot and cold start in a safe manner
- State the possible hazards / risks when carrying out maintenance or operational tasks
- Maintain the hedge trimmer in a safe and efficient working condition
- Adjust the hedge trimmer for safe and comfortable operation where a harness is used
- Operate the hedge trimmer in a safe manner, having regard for the safety of the public, property and environmental factors
- Organise the site and use a systematic method of working where possible

This course covers the safe and effective use and maintenance of pedestrian operated. It is a hands-on course that delivers both health and safety guidance and practical skills.
Course content is as follows:
- Identify the risks associated with the use of different types of pedestrian mowers
- Select appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Identify the controls and components
- Carry out daily checks as indicated in the operator's manual
- Carry out pre-start checks
- Identify and report any faults
- Adjust the cutting mechanism to achieve the required standard
- Operate the machine in a safe and competent manner
- Perform after-use maintenance
- Load and transport the machine (if appropriate)

LANTRA Awards - Safe Use of Pesticides & Pesticide Application Knapsack

This course pertains to the safe use and application of pesticides using knapsack equipment. As pesticides can are potentially harmful substances an emphasis is placed on safe working practices such as decontamination, safe mixing of substances and identifying issues with applicators.
Course content is as follows:
- Understand your duties under the law and help you become a safe and competent pesticide user
- Understand what pesticides are and their ‘field of use'
- State legislation relevant to pesticide application
- Interpret and use label information
- Take the appropriate action to protect yourself and the environment
- Store and transport pesticides safely
- Dispose of the pesticides and containers safely
- Record information
- Identify and describe how hand-held applicators work
- Identify and select nozzles for various applications
- Achieve the required spray quality
- Carry out pre-start checks
- Calibrate the applicator
- Mix and fill applicator accurately and safely
- Operate the applicator safely and efficiently in various situations

This course provides candidates with a foundational knowledge and practical skillset in the safe use of trimmers and brushcutters. This includes both theoretical and practical training, as well as a thorough coverage of health and safety considerations.
Course content is as follows:
- Produce a site-specific Risk Assessment for trimmer and brushcutter operations
- Identify the necessary personal protective equipment required
- Identify the health and safety features required on a trimmer and brushcutter
- Detect defects on the equipment and decide which the operator can remedy and which require a service engineer's attention
- Carry out correctly all routine maintenance in accordance with the machine manufacturer's instruction book
- Prepare the equipment for use with the correct fuel / oil mix
- Start the trimmer/brushcutter from both hot and cold start in a safe manner
- Carry out pre-cutting checks
- State the possible hazards/risks when carrying out maintenance or operational tasks
- Maintain the trimmer / brushcutter and cutting heads in a safe and efficient working condition
- Adjust the equipment for safe and comfortable operation
- Select the correct cutting head for the relevant operating conditions
- Operate the equipment having regard for the safety of the public, property and environmental factors
- Organise the site and use a systematic method of working where possible
LANTRA Awards – Stumpgrinders
£XXX per candidate
This course provides candidates with a foundational knowledge and practical skillset in the safe use of stumpgrinders. This includes both theoretical and practical training, as well as a thorough coverage of health and safety considerations.
Course content is as follows:
- Produce a site-specific risk assessment for stump grinding operations
- State the principles of health and safety legislation and guidelines for using a stump grinder
- Select the appropriate personal protective equipment and state the maintenance requirements
- Carry out operator checks and identify the safety features of a stump grinder
- Carry out routine operator maintenance
- Inspect and identify defects on the grinding mechanism
- Prepare machine prior to operation, start the machine, carry out safety checks and stop machine
- Prepare a work area and a range of stumps for grinding and identify hazardous materials not to be ground
- Use approved techniques for safe and efficient stump grinding of a range of stump sizes
- State the procedure for removing blockages
- Re-instate ground and deal with arising's
- Prepare machine for transport and storage
